"Ohio, The Heart of it All" explores Ohio's identity, culture, and transformation.
Briana takes on a visual reimagining of the state's slogan, showing its complex realities. Thematically exploring the linguistic play on "heart," "hurt," "hard," and "heard," she delves into the emotional truths of her personal experiences and observations in her communities. The word "heart" resonates differently across cultures and languages, embodying love and suffering.
Rooted in Columbus, Ohio, Briana witnesses the heartbeat of the city within Stride Nation—an opportunity for resilience and elevation. Yet, she also observes a disconnect that expands amongst Columbus natives, many of whom remain unaware of or ambivalent toward the local identity.
Through her work, she confronts the notion of Ohioans' "herd mentality," following external influences rather than nurturing their unique creativity.
Despite these challenges, Briana's work seeks to inspire a reclamation of pride and identity. By embracing and celebrating our identity, we can reshape our city's narrative from within—the "heart" of Columbus and Ohio. Give Thanks.
